As far as wins and losses go, San Benito head coach Erica Richardson said, the Spring Fling volleyball tournament in Aptos on Saturday didn’t necessarily go as planned for the Baler boys.

“But as far as progress, we had a really amazing day,” the first-year head coach added. “So it was kind of give-and-take.”

The Baler boys volleyball team compiled a 2-4 record at the nine-team tournament, including a three-game victory (26-24, 22-25, 16-14) over league rival Gilroy, which swept San Benito in Tri-County Athletic League play last week.

“They were really upset with that loss on Tuesday,” Richardson said of the league loss to the Mustangs. “We really came together as a team and I expect a lot will come out of this.

“We played as a team.”

And the Balers mounted an impressive comeback on Gilroy as well. After splitting the first two matches, the Balers trailed the Mustangs 6-12 in the third and deciding game before closing it out on a 10-2 run.

“It was the first time I’ve seen them really play as a team,” Richardson said of the one-day event. “Tournaments are a great place for progress.”

Following the win over Gilroy, San Benito topped Mount Madonna in two games (25-22, 25-23), but couldn’t upend Soquel in its finale as the Knights took two (25-27, 23-25) from the Balers.

The loss to Soquel was San Benito’s second of the tournament. In pool play, the Knights narrowly defeated the Balers in two games (20-25, 24-26).

San Benito also lost to Sacred Heart in two games (18-25, 17-25) as well as Harker in two games (16-25, 10-25).

The Balers (3-6) will return to league play this week with a pair of games. San Benito will visit Salinas on Tuesday and Watsonville on Thursday. Both matches are scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
