The Anzar Hawks opened Mission Trail Athletic League play Tuesday night with a tight, five-set victory (22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 15-6) against visiting Pacific Grove in San Juan Bautista.

Junior Alex Flores had an impressive triple-double in assists, kills and digs for the Hawks. The third-year varsity player contributed 17 assists, 15 kills and 15 digs on Tuesday to lead Anzar, which improves to 1-0 in the MTAL, 5-2 overall.

Flores also added a team-high five service aces in the match.

Meanwhile, Sydnee Masuen led the Hawks with 18 assists, while Brittany Hogeman provided 11 kills.

Anzar also racked up 68 total digs on Tuesday, with the defensive effort led by Carly Johnson’s 18 digs. Johnson also had four service aces on the night. Teammates Jessica Frusetta and Masuen also added 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Head coach Chris Wardlaw could not be reached for comment at press time.

Anzar will continue MTAL play on Thursday when it will travel to Pebble Beach to take on Stevenson. Match time is 6 p.m.
