Despite an impressive match from Alex Flores, the Anzar High girls volleyball team was unable to avenge an early-season loss to Pacific Grove on Monday night when it fell in five games (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-10, 7-15) to the visiting Breakers in San Juan Bautista.

“It was good,” Anzar head coach Jennifer Daughenbaugh said. “But it was heartbreaking.”

The Hawks were previously swept in three games by Pacific Grove on Sept. 22, and again by a 2-1 margin at the Mount Madonna Invitational on Sept. 26.

Monday’s five-game loss to the Breakers drops Anzar to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

Nevertheless, Flores compiled a strong statistical match when she posted 13 kills, 10 digs, nine blocks and four aces for Anzar, while teammate Nicole Seymour contributed 10 blocks and six kills. Carly Johnson had 27 assists and seven digs.

“We played well. But again, it’s just about putting together a few things,” Daughenbaugh said. “Our hits are consistent, but we’re not getting as many points as we should.”

“We’re going through the motions. We’re just not going after them as hard as we have to.”

Nicole Mello and Jessica Frusetta added 16 and 10 digs, respectively, while Jessica Stofer had five aces. Camille Merz added four kills.

Anzar has two more matches this week. On Thursday, the Hawks will visit King City, while on Friday, the team will travel to Stevenson. Both matches are slated for 6 p.m.
