A coalition of local, state and national groups will host a pollinator habitat planting community action volunteer event May 2 and 3 at the San Benito County Historical Park in Tres Pinos.
Volunteers will be encouraged to spend the morning helping to prepare the soil for planting by raking, weeding and removing invasive plants, says a press release from the county. Once the space has been prepared, volunteers will plant native California pollinator plants.
Activities include spreading mulch and installing educational signage after planting.
Volunteers are asked to meet at 9am, and registration is required. The Historical Park is located at 8300 Highway 25 in Tres Pinos. The event includes lunch and refreshments.
“The San Benito Resource Conservation District is excited to be part of the team that is bringing this fun and educational volunteer opportunity for all ages to our community,” said Karminder Brown, executive director of the RCD. “The two pollinator planting days will create multiple lasting benefits—improving habitat for our native bees and butterflies, and beautifying one of our county’s hidden gems, the San Benito County Historical Park.
“We are grateful to California’s Wildlife Conservation Board, the California Association of Conservation Districts and Keep America Beautiful for funding this important project.”
The event is hosted by a team that includes the county, Keep California Beautiful, Keep America Beautiful, the San Benito RCD, Point Blue Conservation Science, San Benito County Historical Society, REACH San Benito Parks Foundation and Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. Also partnering for the event are California Climate Action Corps.
“Through collective action and partnership, volunteers will improve the area’s appearance with native plants,” Cecile Carson of Keep California Beautiful said.
