The unofficial results showed that 51.3 percent of voters approved Measure A while 48.7 percent were against it. The tax increase proposal, though, needed two-thirds support.

The financially-strapped district placed the question for a parcel tax on the ballot for Tuesday. Officials promoted the measure’s intention to halt cuts to programs such as those in libraries, music and computer labs.

But in this struggling community with nearly 18 percent unemployment, voters sent a message to the district – the largest employer in the county.

With all precincts counted – and few remaining provisional ballots to tally – there were 2,573 in favor of the measure and 2,446 against it, according to the elections office.

The measure put forward by the district would have raised an estimated $1.2 million annually for four years. Now the district will get no additional revenue and a bill from the county for the special election’s cost, estimated at $72,000 to $85,000.
