Cancer has touched nearly everyone. Almost everyone knows someone with cancer or has battled the deadly disease themselves. According to the American Cancer Society, 150 people die each day from cancer, and 1.5 million Californians will be diagnosed with the disease this year.

Finding ways to treat the disease is a cause everyone can support – and we’re proud of how thoroughly the community has rallied behind this event.

If you haven’t participated, you’re really missing out on a great time.

Despite the fact that cancer is a serious disease and the cause is important, Relay for Life organizers go to great lengths to make sure the spirit of the event is fun.

Teams pitch tents and create a festival atmosphere. From music to food, from themed laps to children’s activities, from camping out to pitching in, everyone has a good time at a Relay for Life event.

The four Relay for Life fundraisers that have been held in San Benito County have raised more than $255,000 for this cause. That’s impressive.

We think organizers, volunteers, walkers, sponsors and donors all deserve a round of applause for a job well done during the years. But the need is still there.

Relay for Life requires community involvement to make it a success, and your dollar, your mile, is what brings the cure for cancer closer to home.

If you’d like to support the American Cancer Society by participating in the Relay for Life, the fifth Hollister event is coming up soon. It will be held August 8 and 9 at Andy Hardin Field on the San Benito High School campus. It’s not too late to start a team. Just go to www.cancer.org/relay or call 623-2501 for more information.
