Though late in the game, Gavilan College has done its part in involving the San Benito County community in selecting a site for a new campus. Now, it’s our turn to ensure the campus will go to a place that will maximize potential and be a resource for the community

After locals vociferously objected to the college’s plan to buy 85 acres of land near the airport for a full-service campus, the board of trustees formed an ad hoc committee to invite the community into the site-selection process. Many worried that the site is too far from downtown and that it could induce the city to sprawl toward Highway 156. Those are fair arguments and ideas that should have been debated before the school voted to buy the airport property – making it a nearly-done deal.

But, Gavilan has heard the complaints and is listening to new proposals for a campus site. While that doesn’t mean the college is tossing the airport property out the window, it is an opportunity. Now that our complaints have been heard, it is incumbent upon the community to help Gavilan find a suitable piece of land.

Recently, Gavilan College President Steve Kinsella issued this challenge: “People are always saying ‘Oh, I know so-and-so has some land that might work. Well, now is the time for so-and-so to step forward and identify themselves, because frankly we’ve been looking for a long time.”

We couldn’t have said it better. If you have some property, here is what Gavilan is looking for:

Eighty to 100 acres not on fault lines, in flood plains or on prime agricultural land

Accessible to major arterial roadway

Land must at least 10 miles from Gavilan College’s main campus in Gilroy

Must be in San Benito County

The college would like to hear from potential sellers

This is a chance for someone with land that fits Gavilan’s needs to do well by doing good. Selling a piece of property to the college will have an indelible and positive impact on our community. A college in the right place could not only bring economic vitality to our community, it could boost arts, culture and civic pride. It could be a resource that transforms our town.
