The Hollister High boys tennis team had a surprise victory Thursday at No. 4 singles from Ryan Watson.

Watson defeated Kevin Mueller 6-2, 6-3 for the Balers’ only victory in a 6-1 defeat at Palma.

Glen Morris fought through two broken strings, but lost a close match to Mark Grosnick 3-6, 6-7 (5-7). Morris didn’t have an extra racquet, so he had to use an old racket of coach Allen Barker’s.

“That shows you how hard Glen hits the ball,” said Barker.

The Balers (1-16, 1-11 Tri-County Athletic League) did have a three-set loss at No. 3 doubles when Daniel Moyer and Dominique Aiello were downed 6-2, 1-6, 3-6.

The Balers fell at Gilroy on Tuesday 6-1, getting a win from Morris, who defeated nemesis Robbie Marcus for the first time this season, 6-2, 6-2.

Barker is attempting to reschedule a postponed match with North Salinas for April 22, but said there might be a scheduling conflict with the Ridgemark Tennis Center. Barker does plan a practice match with Watsonville at Ridgemark on April 23.

The T-CAL championships are at Ridgemark May 2-3.
