Our first Red Phone caller of the week, a Hollister man, asked the Crimson Crusader to get something done about weeds along Fairview Road from Sunnyslope Road to Hillcrest Road. Our caller also asked to get something done about weeds along Airline Highway from Union Road to Enterprise Road.
The Crimson Crusader called Hollister Street Supervisor Ray Rojas to see what could be done. Rojas said he would tackle the problem as soon as possible, but couldn’t promise our hero quick results. The city’s weed abatement program was virtually eliminated by budget cuts. Rojas said the city has been focusing on weed problems that pose a threat to safety or block views of motorists.
Graffiti Mars Memorial
Our next Red Phone caller of the week, a Hollister woman, asked the Crimson Crusader to take care of graffiti on Hillcrest Road near the spot where Daniel Gallegos was slain. Gallegos, 18, was killed in a gang altercation in 2006. The spot has since served as a makeshift memorial for the teen. Our caller said spray paint and gang graffiti surround the memorial and asked the Crimson Crusader to get it cleaned up.
The Crimson Crusader called Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless to see what could be done. Chambless said he would clean up the graffiti soon – hopefully next week.
Rally Feedback Welcome
The Crimson Crusader also received a half-dozen comments from readers disappointed with the 2007 motorcycle rally on the Free Lance Web site. Our hero greatly appreciates feedback, comments and criticism from readers.
Our hero passed along the comments to rally organizer Seth Doulton. And while we’re on the subject of the Hollister rally, our hero would like to acknowledge, at the request of several callers, the runners-up in the Miss Hollister rally contest. Second place went to Janine Garcia of Hollister. Brittany Vidales of Santa Cruz was awarded third place.
