A fire broke out Sunday afternoon in the 700 block of Seely
Avenue in Aromas, consuming an estimated 40 acres. The fire,
however, didn’t cause any structure damage, and no injuries were
reported, according to fire officials.

A fire broke out Sunday afternoon in the 700 block of Seely Avenue in Aromas, consuming an estimated 40 acres. The fire, however, didn’t cause any structure damage, and no injuries were reported, according to fire officials.
Local fire crews from San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, along with local Calfire, were dispatched to the Seely Avenue location just before 1 p.m. Sunday and contained the fire within about three hours, Calfire Battalion Chief Mike Marlow said.
“At the height of the fire, there were four air tankers, six hand crews, two bulldozers, 30 fire engines and five overhead,” he said. “(There were) no structures lost or damaged, and no injuries.”
The fire’s cause is still under investigation, but Marlow did say it started near the eucalyptus grove on Highway 101 and that erratic winds made the blaze difficult to contain. He added the fire was not set maliciously.
San Benito County Fire Marshal Jim Dellamonica said a fire crew from the county fire department was at the scene through Sunday night in case the fire again became active.
“(They are) out mopping it up as we speak,” Dellamonica said Monday morning. “We had it contained by last night, and they are still out there now.”
