Grandpa Mooney, a prominent local karaoke figure, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 30 at his home in Hollister. He was 90 years old.

A depression era youth from Oklahoma, Willard joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. under FDR before eventually arriving in the great San Joaquin Valley around 1936. He made a new home for his small family in Corcoran. His early years in Corcoran were spent as a labor contractor for the hay and cotton industries.

Willard came to Hollister in 1984, following his sons and working with them in the precision sheet metal trade. He retired completely at the age of 89, spending most of his free time with an abundance of grand- and great-grandchildren.

Singing Karaoke at the local taverns was a heartfelt passion for Grandpa Willard. Well known by the local Karaoke community, Willard had a large repertoire of songs he enjoyed sharing.

His sons, Dave and Will of Hollister; and his son and daughter, Randy and Kathy of San Jose survive him. He is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial celebration of his life is being held on Dec. 10 at 6pm at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Pastor Don Skow will officiate.
