The San Benito High Winter Guard took first place out of 16 teams at the WGI Union City Regional Championships at James Logan High School last Saturday in Union City.

The Winter Guard performed “Eureka” and scored an 82.4, which bested color guard squads from as far away as Reno, Nev., and as far south as Corona.

The SBHS Scholastic “A” color guard will be competing next on March 27 at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino.

AHS Baseball

Holding a 7-2 lead entering the bottom of the third inning, the Anzar Hawks (2-2) allowed seven runs over the next two frames to host Gonzales and lost 9-7 in a darkness-shortened contest on Tuesday in non-league action.

The game was called prior to the start of the fifth inning after a scheduling conflict postponed the exhibition until 4 p.m., 30 minutes after it was originally slated to start. But Gonzales managed to erase the five-run deficit just in time.

Scoring two runs in the third to cut into Anzar’s lead, the Spartans added a five-spot in the fourth inning after the Hawks committed two errors and allowed five walks.

“That fourth inning killed us,” Anzar manager Andrew Barragan said. “That was totally out of our element.”

SBHS Boys Golf

The San Benito boys golf team took a small step back from last week’s performance at the first Tri-County Athletic League Tournament — five strokes, to be exact — but still managed to garner second place on Monday at the second league meet at the Salinas Golf and Country Club.

The Balers shot a 217 behind matching 40s from Will Cross and Nathan Winn, but Palma earned the top spot for the second straight week when it carded a team score of 195.

Chieftain Sergio Rios medaled the round by recording a par 36.

Meanwhile, Jacob DeLeon finished his round with a 44 for the Balers, while Jade Kimura and Dalton Destefanis rounded out the team with a 46 and 47, respectively.
