A 22-year-old Santa Cruz woman was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition after a head-on accident Tuesday involving her car and a truck on Highway 129 just west of the San Benito County line.

The woman was in a 1993 Toyota Celica westbound and lost control on the wet road, spinning into the other lane on the two-lane highway. A 51-year-old Corralitos man driving a 2001 Chevy truck could not avoid her vehicle, leading to the head-on collision, said Officer Cindy Morgan, spokeswoman for the Santa Cruz office of the California Highway Patrol.

The woman suffered from internal injuries, while the man had a minor injury to his left ankle, Morgan said.

The victim stayed in her car with witnesses alongside and waited for medical responders to arrive before being airlifted to San Jose Regional Medical Center, according to the CHP. Morgan did not have an update as of this morning on the Santa Cruz woman’s status.

Authorities do not suspect involvement of alcohol or drugs in the accident, and both drivers were wearing their seat belts, Morgan said.

The accident happened about 250 feet west of the San Benito County line in Santa Cruz County, she noted. It happened about 150 feet west of Old Chittenden Road, she said.

Morgan also pointed out that a Caltrans crew “happened to be in the area” and helped close off both lanes of the highway to clean up.
