An 18-month-old was shot in the chest and killed this morning at a house in the 2300 block of Shore Road, and authorities have two residents in custody, said Undersheriff Pat Turturici of the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s official declined to identify the two people or their relationship to the child.

Authorities responding the rural area outside Hollister shortly before 9 a.m. and found a .357 Magnum outside the house, but haven’t verified if it’s the weapon used against the infant, Turturici said.

“This is terrible. This is heartbreaking,” said Turturici, who declined to comment further.

Many sheriff’s officers responded, and District Attorney Candice Hooper also arrived on the scene.

Firefighters also entered the house at around 10:30 a.m. with a chain saw, but its purpose was unclear.

The property includes a house, two barns and poultry-like pens. A woman on the property shortly after the report was crying and visibly upset and at one point had to be examined by paramedics.
