GILROY – A Gilroy youth basketball coach has been arrested and charged with raping a minor.
Quintin Lemarcas Daye, 44, was arrested on April 2 by Gilroy police for two counts of felony sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14. Daye, who lives at 7665 Laurel Drive, has helped coach a traveling Gilroy girls basketball team during the past two summers, according to one parent whose child played for the team. The parent asked not to be identified.
Daye is currently free from Santa Clara County jail on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the South County Courthouse in San Martin.
According to police reports, Daye is accused of sexually assaulting the minor against her will several times between 1999 and 2002. The girl was 13 years old when the first assault occurred.
“The investigation is still ongoing, so we can’t give you a lot of information,” said Capt. Debbie Moore of the Gilroy Police Department. “But (Daye) was arrested and the child was 13 at the time of origin.”
Under California law, sex crimes against minors under the age of 14 carry stiffer penalties than those against older juveniles.
The girl came to police after a friend urged her to contact authorities, according to the reports. Both blood and semen tests were taken from the girl.
According to the police reports, the alleged victim, who is now 17, first reported the crimes to police on Jan. 11.
The girl told police about several illegal encounters between her and Daye during the past three years, the last of which took place on Dec. 30, 2002.
If convicted on both charges, Daye faces up to 24 years in prison.
