Anzar manager Felipe Vallejo said Greenfield’s starting pitcher was late to the game and didn’t show up until the second inning, allowing the Hawks to take advantage of a spot start by another Greenfield hurler.
It translated into an 8-0 lead through one half-inning.
And while the host Bruins did cut into Anzar’s lead in the home half of the first, scoring two unearned runs off two errors, the Hawks never relinquished their first-inning cushion.
Instead they added three runs in the second, two runs on the third and two more runs in the fifth before the game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.
Shannon Garcia had three hits, including a double and two RBI, and also stole three bases or the Hawks, who improve to 7-0 in CAL play.
“I’m really proud of the girls this year. Everyone is trying hard and my assistant coach Elliott Gill has been out there every day and everyone is coming around,” Vallejo said. “The team has been doing really great.”
Starting pitcher Hakima Hossainzadeh, meanwhile, surrendered just two unearned runs, on two hits while striking out six.
“She’s been on fire,” said Vallejo, who noted that Hossainzadeh has 18 strikeouts in the last three games. “I’m really proud of her.”
In the last three games, Aliyah Gill has also been on a tear. She has compiled six hits, including one triple, two doubles and three singles.
While Anzar’s next scheduled game against Anchorpoint Christian was canceled, as the Warriors are without a softball team this season, the Hawks will square off against Greenfield once again on Monday in a non-league matchup.
First pitch is 4 p.m. in San Juan Bautista.
