Long-time Hollister resident Carla Irene Shields passed away
peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Feb. 1 in a nursing home in
Visalia, thus ending her five year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was 87.
Long-time Hollister resident Carla Irene Shields passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Feb. 1 in a nursing home in Visalia, thus ending her five year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 87.
Carla was born Jan. 2, 1918 in Salinas. She was barely sixteen years old when she exchanged vows with John Shields and began raising their family of five at their home on the San Benito Lateral.
Carla was very active as a 4-H Leader, an avid member of the Cow Bells Association and recipient of the prestigious “Woman Of The Year” award. She was also a volunteer for the Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She also loved spending time in her vegetable and flower gardens.
Carla is survived by her sons John Michael, George and David Shields; her daughter Linda Grady; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shields; her son Jim Shields; and granddaughter Irene Shields. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in her name for the Cow Bells Scholarship association.
Her passing on Feb. 1 – a date once remembered fondly by family members as John Shields’ birthday, now marks the reunion of husband and wife She will be missed by all.
