Editor,

I have read many newspaper articles and letters to the editor recently regarding the San Benito County GOP. As one of those present at the meetings and committee functions, I have worked very closely with the current Chairman Jennifer Zapata since January. Mrs. Zapata has been characterized as one who possesses many negative personal qualities and abuses power. My personal experience working with her leaves me with a more favorable impression.

I hope that the public will make the effort to hear both sides before making a judgment regarding the SBC GOP. I followed that same philosophy when deciding who to vote for in the committee’s January election and I have yet to be disappointed with my decision.

Circumstances can be seen from many different angles, even among GOP members whom you expect would have many things in common. I tend to consider the fact that Mrs. Zapata is new to the job of chairman and came to office under very difficult circumstances. When it comes to politics, it is common to suffer opposition from fellow members that either differ in views or do not like the outcome of the last election. Whatever the case here, Mrs. Zapata has worked well in the face of such challenges and through it all she is consistently kind, dedicated, organized, motivated and, above all, sincere and passionate about GOP issues.

I think that the recent negative characterizations of Mrs. Zapata in the local newspapers are inaccurate and it helps that I know the context of the comments made by Mrs. Zapata’s opponents.

The SBC GOP has some members who have stated plainly their intent to obstruct the work of the committee and it has fallen to the Chairman and other members to find a way to do their work despite this obstacle.

Mistakes are made in the process, but most of the members choose to learn from mistakes in hopes that they can continue to register voters, help elect GOP candidates, support the GOP candidates in office, educate the public on GOP values and issues, and continue to be a positive presence in the community in which we live. Many committee members, including Mrs. Zapata, volunteer in other community organizations.

We invite fellow Republicans to join us in our work and visit us on the Web at sanbenitorepublicans.com.
