Editor,
I would like to take this time to take an exception to a quote made by the HESTA president about past superintendents not visiting schools on opening day. Jan Grist was quoted that, “It was a nice change to see the superintendent visit school sites the first day.”
I haven’t met the new leader and wish him luck in getting the district back on track. As far as previous superintendents not visiting schools, I have to remind Jan that former leader, Tom Andrade, was always visiting schools. How do I know this? I went with him on several occasions, not only on the first day, but during the school year.
I was on the Board of Trustees for 12 years and would spend a few hours visiting the schools myself. As far as ex-superintendent Barranti, the information I got from teachers was that they hardly saw her.
I wish Mr. Crates luck. He will have a tough job. He needs cooperation from teachers, classified and parents to get the district back on it’s feet. I spent a lot of years myself in education in this town and I know people will work with you when it is needed.
