Longtime San Benito County resident Bernarda “Bernie” Esteban, passed away at Valley Care Nursing Center in Watsonville on Tuesday Nov. 9.
Bernie, as Miss Esteban was affectionally known, was born in Tres Pinos, CA, but lived most of her life in Hollister. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Convent and San Benito High School. Her professional life was spent in the accounting field beginning in 1941 for J. C. Penny and Co. for 10 years; four years for the San Benito County Superintendent of school; two years for Steven, Maness and Gilchrist of Salinas; 10 years for the Salinas Public Schools; and 10 years for the San Benito Sheriff-Tax Collectors Office. She retired in 1977 as the fiscal supervisor for the tax collector.
Bernie was a member of Sacred Heart Church, El Gabilan Institute No. 172, Y.L.I., and the NDGW.
She was the daughter of the late Rodrigo and Melchora Esteban; sister of the late Isabel Borba and Dorothy E. Borrego. She is survived by her nephews, Robert Borba, and spouse Carol
of Newark, Richard A. Borba of Morgan Hill, and James Borrego and spouse Evelyn of Watsonville; surviving nieces are Gloria Roberts and spouse Dale of Roseburg, Ore., and Betty Chicourrat and spouse Rene of Auburn; and cousin Tony Sanchez of Stockton. Great nieces and nephews also survive.
Bernie was a great person and always willing to help someone, whether it was a family member or someone else. She loved to do things for people, as her favorite thing was to make zucchini cakes, crochet, and knit. She always carried a smile on her face and was always happy to see one of the family members, including friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Nov. 14, from noon until 5pm at the chapel of the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home, 870 San Benito streets. Friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, Nov. 15 at 10am at Sacred Heart Church at Fifth and College Streets, followed by a memorial service given by the El Gabilan Chapter No. 172, YLI. Entombment will follow at Calvary Mausoleum. Donations are preferred to Sacred Heart Church or your favorite charity.
