Andrea H. Ames died Tuesday evening at 96 at the Mabie Skilled Nursing Facility.
She was born in Hollister and lived here all her life. She attended local schools, graduated from San Benito High School and attended San Jose Nursing School. She was a member of the Hollister United Methodist Church and her hobbies included sewing, knitting and pottery creation. She made baby caps for all the newborn babies at the hospital for many years.
With her ceramic potters wheel, Andrea was a favorite figure at the San Benito County Fair for numerous years. She was an Ausaymas 4-H Club leader for 50 years and she and her potters wheel have visited many classrooms in local schools, teaching children how to create their own personal “masterpiece” from a hunk of clay.
She received the Citizen of the Year award along with Paul Bertuccio in 1981 by the Chamber of Commerce.
She is the mother of David Ames and wife, Shiela, of Hollister; grandmother of Bonnie Garcia of Norco, Lisa Ames of Hollister, Bill Mendonca of Reno, Nev., Cindy Miller of Bend, Ore., Rhonda Bishop and Cliff Mondonca both of Carson City, Nev.; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-grandnieces and nephews and one great-great-great-grandnephew.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Fred Ames in 1993; her daughter Kathy Ames Vochatzer; her sister Florence Harris; and brother Penn Weiss.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 11 at 11am at the Hollister United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the services in the church hall. Private inurnment will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Hollister.
Contributions are preferred to Hollister United Methodist Church or Mabie Skilled Nursing Facility.
Funeral arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home and Crematory in Hollister.
