Long time Hollister resident Al Demos passed away at Mabie Skilled Nursing on Friday May 29th, 2009 at the age of 82 years. Al was a native of Davenport,CA, had graduated from Santa Cruz High School where he played football for the semi-pro Sea Hawks in Santa Cruz. Upon graduation he joined the Navy, served two years in the South Pacific during WWII, was honorably discharged and went to work for the Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring as a Division Manager for the area of Santa Cruz to San Luis Obispo. Al was an avid outdoors person who loved the ocean as a young man claming, hunting for abalone, and fishing on Monterey Bay. He also enjoyed San Luis Reservoir, hunting deer locally and out of state, ducks in Los Banos, and playing golf at Bolado and Ridgemark Golf Courses. He was a member and Past Commander of Hollister Post 9242, V.F.W.; a member of B.P.O.E. No. 1436 of Hollister, the Disabled American Vets, the Hollister Boosters Club, and the Telephone Pioneers Club. He enjoyed time at the V.F.W. DugOut with his fellow Veterans. He was predeceased by his parents Denis and Anita Demos; his first wife Marian Johnson Demos who died Sept.1961 and three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his spouse of 47 years Mary Vigna Demos, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Angie and Dave Baker, Erma Vigna (late Tony), Bob and Sheron Johnson all of Hollister; Joe and Jean Vigna of Anaheim, John and Helen Johnson of W. Virginia, and the late Leroy and Dorothy Garner, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, June 1st, 2009 from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. (No Rosary) at the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister. Family and friends will leave the mortuary today (Tues.) at 9:30 A.M. for a 10:00 A.M. Mass at Sacred Heart Church 5th & College Sts., Hollister. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Hollister Post 9242, V.F.W.
