A 16-year-old man and a 30-year-old driver were arrested Tuesday night after the juvenile was suspected of trying to rob a restaurant at gunpoint earlier in the night.

Around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, a man entered El Epazote Taqueria on McCray Street carrying a shotgun and demanded money from the business’ owner. The owner pointed out the surveillance cameras causing the suspect to flee the area without money.

Witnesses reported the man ran around the building toward Subway and Penguins Carwash where he was picked up by a white pickup truck. After searching the area, officers found a loaded .22 caliber rifle and clothing that matched the suspect’s description.

A county sheriff’s deputy found the white pickup later that night. The driver, Jacob Taylor from Hollister, was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to the crime. Witnesses’ reports helped identify the truck’s passenger, a 16-year-old male, as the gunman.

The juvenile was arrested and booked into San Benito County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted armed robbery, using a firearm in a felony and committing a crime for the benefit of a street gang.

Police are still investigating the crime.

Anyone with more information regarding the crime can call Detective Theresa Aguilera at 636-4330 or call WeTip at (800) 78-CRIME if they with to remain anonymous.
