An Aromas man fled from police custody Sunday morning and ran across across northbound Highway 101 lanes after California Highway Patrol officers tried to pull over his vehicle following a report that he was on his way to rob a gas station.

The man, Davis Yuhas, 43, was found at 4:10 p.m. and arrested on suspicion of evading police.

Police attempted to pull over Yuhas in his older green pickup truck around 10:40 a.m. after Monterey County Emergency Communications broadcast a warning that the man may attempt to rob a nearby gas station, according to a CHP report. The broadcast included a warning that the man and passenger were possibly armed with a handgun.

Yuhas was spotted by a CHP officer on northbound Highway 101 near the border of San Benito and Monterey counties. Yuhas turned into a trailer park, where he lives at 1400 North Highway 101, when an officer forced the man to pull over.

As the officer waited for backup to arrive on scene, Yuhas fled in his pickup and did not stop when police sirens rang. A pellet gun was thrown out of the vehicle as it drove from the trailer park, said Jaime Rios, CHP public information officer.

Yuhas eventually lost control of the pickup when making a left turn from southbound Highway 101 to northbound Highway 101 near Cole Road.

After losing control, officers allege that Yuhas ran from his pickup, crossed the freeway, jumped a fence and hid in the rural area east of the freeway.

A passenger, Belinda Butler, 48, out of Salinas, was found in the vehicle and was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Yuhas was found later in the day at the same trailer park, according to a CHP report.

Officers found no evidence inside the vehicle that Yuhas was on his way to rob a gas station, Rios said.
