The county coroner’s office has identified the man found dead in the middle of a Hollister road Sunday night.

The man killed was Alberto Preciado, 69, of Hollister, said Lt. Roy Iler with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office, which acts as the coroner. He died of blunt-force trauma to the head, Iler said.

A Hollister police spokesman could not be reached immediately today for an update on the investigation, while investigators initially called it a hit-and-run.

The fatality, which had no reported witnesses, happened in the 800 block of Fourth Street. Police arrived at the scene around 8 p.m. and found a man lying in the middle of the road. The man had a fatal injury to his head, police said.

An hour after the incident, a person called the police department and identified himself or herself as the one who hit the man with a vehicle, police said. Police recovered the vehicle but are still investigating the crime.
