San Benito’s junior varsity girls basketball team moved to 8-0 on the season with a 60-18 win over Scotts Valley on Thursday.

Vanessa Casalegno paced the strong effort with 21 points and four assists.

Kim Warner, Jen Guerrero and Tara Bugarin all play well down low and each grabbed five rebounds.

Lauren Adamek also pulled down five boards while scoring 13 points. Courtney Cabrera added eight points and six rebounds and Victoria Aguilera had six points and six rebounds.

The strong defensive effort was aided by three steals apiece from Arielle Rianda and Crystal Perreira.

The ‘Balers are next in action on Tuesday when they face Pajaro Valley at 6:30pm.

Freshmen

After losing to Aptos 31-16 in its previous matchup, the San Benito freshman girls basketball team traveled for a rematch and fell again, losing 38-26.

The Haybalers struggled in the first quarter, falling behind 12-3. They picked it up over the next two periods, outscoring Aptos 14-11.

The came out strong early in the fourth quarter and pulled to within two point with five minutes to go.

But Aptos rebounded with a 12-2 run to put away the game.

Melisah Cortez led the way for the ‘Balers with nine points,12 rebounds and three steals. Alexis Sanchez added six points and six rebounds. Kat Graves had six steals and four points and Sam Johnson contributed 10 rebounds.

The loss dropped San Benito to 2-8. The ‘Balers are now off until the new year when they face North Monterey County on Jan. 2.
