The San Benito girls water polo team lost 7-4 to Live Oak at Santa Catalina Wednesday in the semifinal round of the Tri-County Athletic League championship tournament.

San Benito will be playing Stevenson, who defeated Gilroy, in the third-place game Saturday at noon at Santa Catalina. Live Oak moves on to the championship against Santa Catalina.

With Live Oak’s top player, Ronni Gautshi, out with tonsilitis, San Benito was able to keep the game close, matching the Acorns on the scoreboard throughout the first half. The game was tied at 3-3 at the half.

But Live Oak won the third quarter 2-1 and then shutout the Haybalers 2-0 in the final quarter.

A big part of Live Oak’s momentum came when the Acorns were able to draw a kickout on Katie Buzzetta, who left with just one goal.

“Hollister’s a good a team,” said Live Oak coach Sharon Hyrne. “They are fast. A lot of the teams in the league aren’t fast like they are. They have some really good shooters.”

Valerie Nicolason had two goals for San Benito. And Kirsten Palm had one.

For Live Oak, Laura Melroy led the way with three goals. Laura Shope had two, and Ashley Rojas and Breanna Sennert had one each.
