Our family would like to invite all those who would like to celebrate Betty’s life at our home. You may drop by after 12 noon on August 30, 2014. The family would prefer donations to be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the American Cancer Society in Betty’s memory. Condolences can be made at www.HabingFamilyFuneralHome.com.
Betty Lou Smith Bracco McCarn was born on February 11, 1931 in Cushing, OK to Dora and Edgar Smith. They moved to California in 1943 when she was 12.
The family worked in agriculture and was based in Porterville, near Bakersfield, CA. She and her sister Goldie picked fruit, apples from Porterville to the top of Washington State. Eventually, everyone made their way to Gilroy around 1955 and has been here most of her life since. Here, she met the love of her life Jerry Bracco and they married and had five children.
Jerry worked as a carpenter and Betty was a mother and homemaker until 1960. When she added working at part time jobs to help with family finances. One of those was the local “Becky’s Burger Pit”, an old hangout of locals and state 101 travelers.
If you could not find them at home they were probably at their favorite fishing hole and camping, watching their boys playing baseball, being part of their churches activities, or out and about with family activities.
At church they would play music, Jerry the trombone and Betty the guitar.
Jerry and Betty opened the first downtown antique store “Monterey Street Antiques” in 1986 – Betty’s lifelong hobby. Shortly after all that effort, Jerry died in a tragic construction accident. After much persuasion from family and friends Betty got back out socially.
In 1989, she met her next love William Doc McCarn and married in 1990. She was an avid collector of antiques and many other interests. She later retired from the antique business and began lots of traveling and sewing.
We spent many years traveling in our old FMC motorhome. Seeing friends, family and sites around the USA. She was always planning our next trip. She loved to travel, sometimes just her and her girls: New Orleans, Georgia, Texas, New Mexico just to name a few. Family to Hawaii, Reno and Las Vegas – “O” did she love the slots. She would make Hawaiian shirts and dresses for everyone for every trip to the Islands.
This year she got into making quilts. She made one for each of her children and me – we will always cherish them.
Betty died of cancer and other complications on August 13, 2014 surrounded by her family at home.
Betty is survived by her spouse William Doc McCarn; her children, Deborah and Bob Hunt of Fresno, CA, Tamara and Kevin Waltemier of Las Vegas, NV, Dion Bracco of Gilroy, CA, Daniel Bracco of Honolulu, HI and Kathy Cleveland of Gilroy, CA, Shawna Lee and Michael Garrett of Oswego, IL, Micheal Doc and Kimber McCarn of Pleasanton, CA; Grandchildren, Tyler, Ethan and Morgan Hunt, Heather Lile, Lindsay, Jarod and Katie Mom, Michele and Elizabeth Bracco, Lauren Bracco, Sarah Lew, Stephanie Bracco and Jennifer Cleveland, Reagan Grace, Quinn Micheal, Skylar Katelynn McCarn, Crystil, Christopher and Marilee Garrett; Great-grandchildren, Hunter and Declan Lile, Layla Mom, Hannah and Christian Hunt, Ramon Hunt, and Betty Mae Mom.
