In an effort to curb recent burglaries and be more effective with limited resources, the Hollister Police Department will bring back Bicycle Patrols starting this summer. The program had been suspended for about 10 years due to budget cuts.

The department plans to have patrol officers use the bicycles, when time allows, during their regular patrol activities. The bicycle officers will also be used for special events such as the Hollister Airshow, 4th of July firework celebrations and Saddle Horse Parade.

The bike officers who attended a state-certified training course will ride distinctly marked and equipped police bicycles and be in clearly marked police uniforms. The bicycle patrols will also be used in areas that are experiencing problems with drugs and burglaries. Bicycles have some advantages on patrol cars such as navigating large crowds at events and giving an officer a more stealthy approach, according to a press release from HPD.

“An officer in a patrol car is fairly noticeable,” said David Westrick, the interim chief of police, in the press release. “When an officer is on a bicycle, it allows them to approach silently. We are hoping this helps us curb our recent spike in property crimes.

“We are excited about using these alternative patrol techniques to help combat Hollister’s crime issues.”

The department is also excited about the positive interaction that policing on a bicycle can have for police and community relations.

“Taking officers out of a car and putting them on a bicycle allows the public to meet us face to face in a positive way, instead of just seeing us drive by on our way to our next call,” Westrick said.

The bicycles were purchased years ago and recently refurbished locally for about $100. The certified state training was free.

“The police department is constantly looking at ways to better serve our community even during tough economic times,” Westrick said. “We get a whole new tool and patrol program in our tool bag at a minimal cost.”
