Nelson Hardy

The body of an Aromas man reported missing April 3 has been found in an Aromas fishing pond at the end of Rose Avenue, according to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

A fisherman at about 1 p.m. Tuesday reported to authorities he had observed what looked like a floating body in the pond.

A Monterey County dive team retrieved the body from the pond. Detectives then positively identified the person as 24-year-old Nelson Hardy.

His family reported in early April that he had run from the house in the 300 block of Carr Avenue after becoming agitated in a conversation with his mother. He left behind his car and had worn blue jeans, boots and no shirt, with a navy blue sweatshirt in his hand.

Family, friends and sheriff’s deputies, along with search and rescue volunteers, had searched the 25-acre property. The sheriff’s office could not locate him through his cell phone because the phone carrier said it had been turned off or the battery was dead.

An autopsy has been scheduled for later in the week to determine the cause of death.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to call the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office at (831) 636-4080 or the TIP-LINE at 831-636-4084.
