Singles 55+ are invited to dinner

HOLLISTER – Singles 55 and up are invited to join a dinner club in San Benito County that meets on the third Saturday of the month, with the next meeting scheduled for Jan. 19. The group visits area restaurants for the meal, with the choice of each month’s restaurant selected by group majority. The group also enjoys the occasional dinner at a member’s home. SAN BENITO – The San Benito County Arts Council is calling all local artists to save the date for the next Open Studios Art Tour 2013. OS 2013 will be held on Saturday & Sunday, June 1-2 throughout San Benito County. SBSC Annual Members’ Choice Awards

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Stage Company will host its Annual Members’ Choice Awards Feb. 2, at 6:30 p.m., at the Granada Theater. Doors will open with refreshments served at 6 p.m. The annual event is an opportunity to thank volunteers, supporters and participants for their involvement throughout the year. Weekly book sale

HOLLISTER – Friends of the San Benito County Free Library holds weekly book sales on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, behind the library and the Historical Museum at West and Fifth streets, Hollister. (Enter from West Street.) Book donations can be delivered to the book sales or at the library, 470 Fifth St., in the two gray book bins in the lobby Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 8 p.m.

Class of 2003 prepares for reunion

Friends to hold Adopt-a-Book fundraiser

HOLLISTER – The Friends of the San Benito County Free Library invite the community to be sponsors for its Adopt-a-Book fundraiser through “Birdies for Charity” to buy books for the San Benito County Free Library. For every dollar donated, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation will match it plus 15 percent. If donations are made online at, 20 percent additional funds will be added to the donation. Brochures with information on how to donate are available at San Benito County Free Library, the Chamber of Commerce office and at local golf clubs. Fellowship open to local students

HOLLISTER – The Center for California Studies is offering a fellowship program for recent college graduates with a bachelor’s degree. The opportunities include the Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship, Senate, Executive and Judicial fellowships. Applicants must be 20 years of age by Sept. 1, 2013. Graduate, postgraduate and mid-career applicants are also welcome. The deadline to apply for a fellowship is Feb. 11, with each fellowship having its own requirements. The fellowship runs 11 months, with health benefits and a monthly stipend of $1,972.

Two local bands battle in SF

More than a dozen local musicians will be performing at DNA Lounge in San Francisco on Jan. 20 as part of a Battle of the Bands finale. Smith Alley and Trophy Kids, from Hollister, advanced to the finale along with six other bands to compete for $500 in cash, 20 hours of studio time and an opportunity to headline at the club. Judging is based on audience response and applause at the end of the show. The DNA Lounge show is for all ages. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Learn bridge in a day

HOLLISTER – Learn to play bridge in one day during a five-hour session on Feb. 2 at the Dunne Park Club House, on Sixth and West Street.
