Two Salinas residents have been confirmed killed and a third had major injuries from an accident today on Pacheco Pass near Dinosaur Point, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident was first reported shortly after 7 a.m. A vehicle appears to have hit an embankment and started on fire, according to the CHP’s online reporting system. The CHP at about 7:50 a.m. requested a coroner for two people confirmed killed.

The driver sustained some moderate to major injuries and was transported to San Jose Regional Medical Center.

The right passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and appears to be a juvenile male, he said.

The right rear passenger was also pronounced dead at the scene and appears to be around 5 years old, according to Rios, however the exact age has not been confirmed.

The car they were driving was a 2010 Chevy four door, and CHP believes the occupants are from Salinas.

“The roadways out here are pretty slick,” said Rios. “We suspect the driver lost control of the vehicle, went up the incline and then back down onto the road.”

Right now westbound 152 is partially shut down until the tow trucks and coroners are finished, Rios said.

The No. 1 lane is open but traffic is backed up all the way past the Merced county line, according to Rios.

The CHP reported that many citizens in the area tried to help extinguish the car fire.
