Hollister resident Clara Johnson Shields died in a San Jose hospital on Friday, October 11, 2013, after a brief illness. She was 74.
Clara Johnson Shields was born on June 7, 1939 in Port Smith, Virginia to W.R. “Jonny” Johnson and Clara Johnson. She moved to California as a young child and grew up in Hollister, graduating from Hollister High School in 1957.
Four generations of her family have served in the United States Navy as did her husband, George Shields. They were married on June 16, 1957 in the Methodist Church in Hollister.
Over the next 30 years, the Navy would take them all over the world, including time living in Japan, Spain and Italy. In her travels supporting her husband’s Navy career, Mrs. Shields visited all 50 states and every province of Canada.
After her husband retired from the Navy, they returned to Hollister, where she lived for the final 26 years of her life.
Their daughter, Irene Shields, also served in the Navy.
Mrs. Shields is survived by her husband of 56 years, George Shields, two grandchildren, Tasha Lloyd and Andrew Cyhanick, both of Virginia, and four great-grandchildren, one of whom, at the age of eight, has already expressed his desire to serve in the military.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Jim and Dan Johnson and her daughter, Irene Shields.
Mrs. Shields enjoyed her home and family. Her sewing and artistic abilities were evident to all of her family and friends.
