Mesa passed away at his residence on June 14th at the age of 79
years.
Former San Juan Bautista civic leader and longtime San Benito County resident Daniel E. “Dan” Mesa passed away at his residence on June 14th at the age of 79 years. Dan was a native of Tehachapi, California and lived in San Benito since 1932. He graduated from Hollister High School as well as served with the U. S. Army during World War II. His involvements in and through San Juan Bautista included Little League Coach; San Juan Grammar School PTA member; Cub Master for San Juan Bautista Pack 475; a Volunteer Fire Department Fireman; Member of the Chamber Of Commerce; former San Juan Bautista City Treasurer and City Planning Commissioner; Past Grand Knight for Knights Of Columbus Council 1792; Life Member of San Juan Post No. 6359 V.F.W.; a member of SIRS 131 of Hollister; the Mexican American Golf Association; Northern California Golf Association; and the Watsonville Seniors Bowling (ABC).

Dan’s hobbies included golf, bowling, traveling, walking, and gardening.

Dan retired from Ideal Cement Plant in San Juan Bautista when the plant closed. He stayed active as a employee for Almaden Vineyards, Contadina Foods, and permanently retired from the United States Post Office, Gilroy Office after working as a mail carrier for 17 years.

Dan is survived by his spouse Susan Mesa of San Juan Bautista. His children and their spouses David Mesa, wife Marylu of Prunedale; Laura Lopez, husband Robert of Hollister; Diane Mesa of San Juan Bautista, and Paul Mesa, spouse Meghan of San Jose.

He was the grandfather of Michelle Lopez of Hollister and the late Matthew Lopez.

Great grandfather of Jess Perez of Hollister. He was the brother of Juanita Mesa and Frances Alejandro of San Juan Bautista; Brother in law of Joe Ledesma, wife Enis of San Diego, and Carolina Ledesma of San Juan Bautista. Numerous nieces and one nephew survive him. Visitation will commence at the chapel of the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister this Friday at 12 noon and will be followed by the recitation of the rosary Friday evening at 6 P.M.

Family and friends will leave the mortuary chapel on Saturday morning at 10:l5 A.M. to proceed to Mission San Juan Bautista where a Mass of The Resurrection will be offered at 11am. Interment will follow at the Veterans Section of San Juan District Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the Matthew Lopez Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the American Cancer Society c/o the mortuary chapel.
