San Benito County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 24-year-old mother and placed her two daughters in protective custody June 17 after they reported methamphetamine paraphernalia and residue found at her residence.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Tom Keylon said deputies investigated the woman’s home after a complaint was forwarded to them from San Benito County Child Protective Services. Deputies also arrested a 39-year-old man for resisting a peace officer and the children’s 42-year-old grandmother who, Keylon said, was hiding in a closet and had a bench warrant issued for her arrest.

The mother was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and child endangerment and booked into San Benito County jail. Her children will be put into foster care or released to a relative who CPS approves as having a healthy environment for children, Keylon said.

“When these people are smoking meth, the residue is in the air and can be ingested and harm others,” Keylon said. “I think meth is the biggest problem we deal with today.”
