The man responsible for torching an entire block of downtown Hollister in 1991 and sentenced later to life in prison for a third strike has been paroled, the district attorney’s office confirmed today.

Anthony Robert Mizner, 49, was sentenced to six years in prison for setting an early morning blaze in March 1991 that destroyed multiple businesses on the east side of San Benito Street between Sixth and Seventh streets. In 1999, Mizner was sentenced to life in prison – on what prosecutors argued was a third strike – for kicking a woman in the head while she drove him to jail, according to court documents.

Mizner was paroled two months ago.

District Attorney Candice Hooper said today she is looking into why Mizner is a free man.

“They struck a strike,” Hooper said. “I don’t know why.”
