Responders airlifted a driver involved in an accident Sunday morning on the Highway 25 bypass in Hollister, according to a police sergeant.

The accident occurred around 10 a.m. on the bypass between Park Street and Hillcrest Road. Authorities had to shut down a portion of the bypass for about 90 minutes, said Sgt. Don Pershall with the Hollister Police Department.

A driver in a sport utility vehicle northbound on the bypass swerved for an unknown reason and over-corrected, with the rear section of the SUV moving into the southbound lane, Pershall said. A Ford Mustang in the southbound lane struck the SUV, causing the sport utility vehicle to roll over on its side in the middle of the road.

Authorities airlifted the lone resident in the SUV to a regional hospital, but authorities do not believe the driver had life-threatening injuries, Pershall said.

There were two people in the other car. Responders took one of them to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for precautionary measures, while the other person was uninjured.

Pershall did not immediately have other details on the accident or people involved.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor. It is unclear at this point whether those involved were wearing seat belts, he said.
