Edward J. Stark died of congestive heart failure at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz on Dec. 2, 2003.

Mr. Stark was born in San Francisco on April 7, 1915. He grew up in Hollister, attended Menlo Junior College where he was captain of the football team, and student body president; later graduating from Stanford University in 1937. He belonged to Delta Upsilon fraternity as does his grandson.

A First Sergeant in the 69th Infantry Division during WWII, Mr. Stark fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was among the group liberating Dachau and Buchenwald. When the war ended, he moved to Fresno with his family, working in agricultural packaging until he retired from Georgia Pacific in 1983 and moved to Aptos. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, and walking with his faithful Labrador, “Hershey.”

Mr. Stark was the great-grandson of Charles Arcan who, as a little boy, survived Death Valley and came to settle in Santa Cruz with his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife Jeanne of Aptos; his children Edward K. Stark of Monterey and Gail H. Stark of Aptos; and his dear grandchildren Carolin P. Stark and Edward K. Stark Jr.

A private cremation is under the direction of Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel. Services will be private. Memorial gifts may be made in Mr. Stark’s name to a favorite charity.
