Edwin C. “Bud” Garrett passed away on June 19. He was born in Hollister in 1910. Bud worked on his dad’s chicken ranch when he was 8 years old on Sunnyslope Rd. He worked for Hollister Canning Company when he was 14 and 15. At 16 he went to work for Pollana Bakery in Hollister. Bud then went to the “Gold Country” in Jackson, CA. He worked 6 nights a week for baking for $40. In 1942 Bud went to Richmond, CA to work in the shipyards. Wages were 86 cents per hour. Then he went to work for LAG Steam Lines, a private company for $2.50 an hour.
In 1946 his mother passed away, so he came back home to help his father. Later in 1952 Bud got his contractor’s license in brick laying. When you drive around Hollister most of the older buildings and fireplaces were built by Bud when he was a masonry contractor. Bud stopped working in 1970. In 1987 he helped raise money for uniforms for the Baler Band and Auxiliary. He helped raise 48 percent of the cost.
Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman and traveled all over the world. In India he shot a tiger while riding on top of an elephant.
Numerous articles about his life and hunting trips have been published in the Free Lance and Pinnacles newspapers over the years.
His son, Robert Garret who passed away in 1950 due to Leukemia preceded Mr. Garrett in death. He is survived by his ex-wife, May Vern Sousa of Santa Cruz. Mr. Garrett’s daughter, Shirley Murphy of Santa Cruz, CA also survives him and several nieces and nephews and long time friends, Ed Perreira and Emma Perreira, Albert Aiello and Gene and Lois Aquistapace. Also many friends he met all over the world on his hunting trips.
Friends can pay their respects on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 from 12:00 noon until 8:00pm at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:30am at the funeral home chapel. Rev. Richard Clark of Immaculate Conception Church will officiate.
Interment will follow the funeral services at the IOOF Cemetery.

Lucia Ruiz
Lucia Ruiz died on June 18th at Hazel Hawkins Hospital. She was born in Michoacan, Mexico and was 31 years old. She had moved to Hollister from Mexico 11 years ago and was a member of Sacred Heart Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Kristy Ruiz of Hollister and her brothers and sisters, Felix Ruiz of San Pablo, Ignacio Ruiz of Hollister, Juan Ruiz of Hollister, David Ruiz of Hollister, Maria Guadalupe Cortez of Hollister, Yolanda Ruiz of Mexico and Socorro Ruiz of Mexico.
She is also survived by her mother, Socorro Sanchez Ruiz of Hollister.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 23, 2005 at 2:00pm at Sacred Heart Church. Rev. Rudy Ruiz will be the celebrant.
Friends can gather at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home at 1:30pm for a procession to the church.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:00pm on Thursday evening at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Cerrito Colorado, Municipio Villamar, Michoacan, Mexico.
