Smoke billows out of the West Coast Rubber Recycling plant Thursday morning after a piece of equipment caught fire.

A fire that started shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday at West Coast Rubber Recycling was contained to the machinery where it originated.

The fire occurred Thursday morning at the plant, 1501 Lana Way. A short time later, Hollister firefighters had the blaze contained.

Fire Chief Fred Cheshire said it happened around a department shift change, and so there were six firefighters and two hose lines available to respond immediately.

He said it started in “some equipment” at the plant near the Hollister airport and burned that machinery only.

“All of the other products, we were able to separate from the fire area,” Cheshire said.
