San Benito County Supervisors voted to pursue a contract with the city of Hollister fire department for fire services.

A fire early Wednesday destroyed a building at the Sunnyslope Road medical offices.

The fire was reported shortly after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at the medical office complex, 930 Sunnyslope Road.

One of five buildings on site had been fully involved when firefighters arrived, said Hollister Fire Chief Fred Cheshire. A neighboring building was starting to catch fire as well, he said.

Firefighters largely contained damage to the one building, which was totaled by the fire. Cheshire said the medical offices could conduct business Wednesday in the four buildings not devastated by the blaze.

The fire occurred a couple of blocks down the road from Sunnyslope Elementary School, but Cheshire said the blaze did not cause any issues with traffic.

“We actually put quite a bit of time, a lot of effort into making sure we had roads open so the flow of traffic, there was some flow of traffic to and from the school,” Cheshire said. “There was never any health threat to the kids, or we would’ve tried to get school canceled.”

Cheshire said considering the size of the fire and amount of damage, the department is receiving help from Santa Cruz fire investigators.
