A vegetation fire was reported at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Lonoak Road and Highway 25, about 15 miles northeast of King City in Monterey County, according to Calfire.

The agency responded to the incident with five fire engines, one chief officer, an air tactical observation unit, two air tankers, a helicopter with helitack crew, one bulldozer, and a fire investigator, for a total of about 34 firefighters fighting the fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found approximately five acres already involved in grass and brush along Lonoak. A combination of high temperatures and afternoon wind flared the fire to more than 25 acres within minutes. Calfire air tankers dropped retardant to slow the spread of the fire until ground resources could arrive on scene and complete containment.

State Route 25 was closed for about 20 minutes during retardant drops. Calfire made an aggressive initial attack and contained the fire to 38 acres in less than an hour, according to Calfire. No structures were threatened by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Calfire wants to remind the public that maintaining 100 feet of defensible space may help to save lives and property. Although no structures were immediately threatened by the fire, Calfire wants to remind the public to be safe and practice exit drills.
