One new year’s resolution shared by many will be to shed unwanted pounds. It’s been proven that fad diets don’t work, and the healthiest way to lose weight and keep it off is a balance of eating right and exercise. Slender Lady is in the business to help you do just that.

“Slender Lady is actually a franchise based in San Antonio, Texas,” said Hollister franchise owner Jill Martin. “It’s a weight-loss center exclusively for women, based on providing clients with one-on-one nutrition counseling and exercise. There are no pre-packaged meals to buy or diet pills to take. Unlike other programs that hold weekly meetings, we work around our clients’ schedule.”

Slender Lady follows a program developed by Georgia Kostas of the Cooper Clinic. Clients eat something every three hours while counselors help them monitor their fats and sugars.

“This isn’t a ‘lose 10 pounds in a week’ program,” Martin said. “Our goal is to help you lose slowly and keep it off.”

In fact, Martin notes that not everyone needing nutrition counseling needs to lose weight. Some people are looking to gain weight, which can be equally challenging. Slender Lady is ready to help with a variety of weight-management needs.

“I’ve always been interested in nutrition,” Martin said. “I had an overweight cousin that attended a Slender Lady in another city. She did really well in the program. I decided I wanted to learn more about it.”

After careful research, which included hearing several testimonials, Martin and her manager Julie Hemingway went to a training in San Antonio where they received nutrition training as well as equipment training.

“Essentially, what we are to our clients is their counseling coach,” Martin said. “Our program is customized to each person. Every plan is designed differently. When people come in we give them a tour, free figure analysis and test their body fat. Each program is personalized to how much weight they have to lose.

Memberships are available for 12, 18 and 24 months and clients receive six months of one-on-one nutrition counseling. Once they’re tested, a program is designed just for them.

Unlike many programs, Slender Lady includes weekly consultations with clients. Counselors closely monitor a client’s progress while continuing to teach positive life-changing habits.

“We have our clients journal a lot of things,” Martin said. “These include goal setting, keeping daily food logs and anything unusual that may affect weight loss or gain. We also will do meal comparisons for them when they’re going out. We have a lot of suggestions and offer that one on one help.

“The exercise portion of our program consists of cardio resistant weight training. We use positive hydraulic machines for this. The resistance they provide is like shock absorbers. The faster you do the machines, the better. We prefer that our clients come in at least three times a week for a 30-minute circuit. It’s called our Shape 2000 circuit and they burn up to 650 calories per workout. An aerobic workout only burns between 200 to 250 calories.”

Martin notes that in a world where meals are super-sized and nutrition training not taught in schools, too many people in our nation are overweight. Slender Lady offers a mother/daughter program, and clients range in age from 9 to 90. There are also first-visitor discounts and $50-off gift certificates available.

Slender Lady of Hollister will have its grand opening Jan. 16 with door prizes and a raffle. It is located at 401 McCray Street, Suite B14 in the Clocktower Plaza. Open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. In January, hours will extend to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an extra hour in the evening.
