She raised her defiant fist at a cancer diagnosis seven years ago and proclaimed “not yet” and vowed to continue a life well-lived. In the end, Frances Bevilacqua Kohler finished her journey doing one of the things she loved most; traveling to see family.
Born to Madrone prune ranchers Frank and Eva Bevilacqua, Fran, a South County native, attended Morgan Hill schools and graduated from Live Oak High School in 1950.
The bonds of friendship established early, Fran never missed a chance to reconnect with old friends at many class reunions over the years. She went on to earn her nursing degree at San Jose State gathering more life-long friends along the way.
After marrying Richard Kohler in 1953, Fran plied those nursing skills in 20 different cities as Dick’s work in the FBI saw them transferred so many times over his career. Children Valerie, now of Mission Viejo, and Kevin, Watsonville, joined the family by and by.
As a widow later in life, Fran reinvigorated her creative side and enjoyed perfecting her talents in knitting, sewing and quilting. She was an accomplished potter as well.
Leisure travel sparked a new pastime for Fran. Her 2001 tour to China opened new vistas and led to a confident “can do” attitude which led to many more trips abroad and throughout the United States.
An avid reader, Fran took great pleasure in pre- and post-travel research.
As an active volunteer, Fran spent countless hours serving in the Mendocino Library, Little River Fire Department Auxiliary and Arts Center. She was also a shortwave enthusiast.
Fran leaves her children as well as five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Her brother Don Bevilacqua (Chris) of Gilroy was a great source of strength and love to her.
