San Benito 6, Salinas 3

A two-yard touchdown run by San Benito High senior Tim Lango in the second quarter proved to be the difference in the Balers 6-3 win over Salinas High last Friday night in Hollister. The clutch win allowed the Balers to remain alone in second place in league behind Palma heading into tonight’s annual Prune Bowl game at Gilroy High. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Boys Water Polo

San Benito 9, Salinas 7

The San Benito High boys water polo team fine-tuned for this week’s Central Coast Section playoffs by picking up a 9-7 win over the Cowboys of Salinas in the championship game of the Tri County Athletic League’s championship tournament last weekend. The Balers ended the regular season with a record of 15-6 overall and a 7-0 mark in league.

Girls Water Polo

Santa Catalina 16, San Benito 6

Despite making the playoffs, the San Benito girls water polo team entered this week’s postseason tournament with a bittersweet taste in its mouth after losing 16-6 to Santa Catalina School in the championship game of the league’s season-ending tournament. Despite the loss, the Balers still posted an impressive 19-4 overall record and went 7-2 in league play.

Girls Volleyball

San Benito 3, Notre Dame 0

After suffering a difficult 25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 loss to Salinas on Oct. 26, which forced the San Benito High girls volleyball team to share the league title with the Cowboys, San Benito High rebounded in the final regular game of the season just four days later against Notre Dame Salinas. The Balers swept the Spirits 25-10, 25-21, 25-21, allowing them to earn a bye and head into the opening round of the section playoffs as the top seed in Division I. On Saturday, the 28-7 Balers will either face No. 8 seed Gilroy or No. 9 seed Andrew Hill in the CCS quarterfinals, which will take place at 11 a.m. at North Salinas High School.

Anzar High 3, Stevenson 0

The Anzar Hawks wrapped up the 2006 regular season last week with a 25-12, 25-10, 25-10 over Stevenson. As a result of their second-place finish in the Mission Trail Athletic League the Hawks have earned a spot in the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs for the sixth year in a row. On Saturday, the No. 5 seed Hawks will square off with No. 4 seed Castilleja in the section quarterfinals, which will take place at North Salinas High School at 3 p.m.
