Hollister police reported that a 6-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet Monday night while sitting on a couch in her family’s Almond Drive home, according to police.
Police investigators believe that a bullet entered the home at about 7:15 p.m. Monday through the roof – and speculated that someone shot a firearm into the air, leading to the injury.
When police arrived, the young girl had been holding her leg while on the couch. The wound was “superficial,” according to police, and she was treated and released at the home.
Police recovered the bullet and noted that there were reports of shots fired on the northwest side of the city.
Below is the police statement:
On August 12, 2013 about 7:15 P.M. Hollister police officers responded to the unit of block Almond Drive for a report of a six-year-old girl who had been hit by bullet.
Hollister police officers, along with the Hollister Fire Department and AMR responded to a report of a young girl who had been hit by a bullet. Officers found the young girl sitting on a couch in the living room of the residence, holding her leg. Officers learned she was sitting on the couch when a bullet fell through the ceiling, striking her leg. The wound turned out to be superficial, as the bullet only grazed the young girl’s leg. She was treated and released at her residence. The bullet was recovered.
Officers investigating the incident believe that the bullet traveled from the north-west area of Hollister. Shortly before the call of the injured girl came out, several shots were reported in this area of town.
The Hollister Police Department would like to remind everyone of the dangers of shooting a firearm into the air. In this particular case, the young child was fortunate and did not sustain a serious injury. Nation-wide, every year people are seriously injured or killed as a result of firearms being shot into the air.
