The San Benito boys golf team posted a 212 on Monday in its first Tri-County Athletic League Tournament at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas, finishing second in the league meet to Palma.

The Chieftains, led by medalist Matt Ogden, who recorded a 2-under 34 on the front nine, compiled a 183 to lead all TCAL teams.

Meanwhile, San Benito’s Will Cross and Dalton Destefanis each led the Balers with a 39 — Destefanis carding the low-score on his birthday, no less. Jacob DeLeon recorded a 42, Taylor Weatherly shot a 43, and Darren Hopkins rounded out the scoring with a 49.

Haybaler Jade Kimura shot a 54.

The team score of 212 bested five other teams, including third-place Everett Alvarez, which shot a 227.

Salinas took fourth at 234, Gilroy was fifth with a 241, Alisal finished sixth at 289 and North Salinas rounded out the league in seventh with a 311.

The TCAL Tournament was the third match the Balers have played this season. Last Thursday, San Benito defeated Pacific Grove 212-266 behind medalist Will Cross’ 1-under 36, which was recorded on the front nine of the Diablo Course at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

Weatherly (40), DeLeon (40), Destefanis (48) and Kimura (48) rounded out the team’s scoring, while Hopkins carded a 49.

Last Monday, San Benito finished third in a four-team meet at Corral de Tierra, posting a 231. The Balers finished behind Palma (199) and Carmel (201), but edged Salinas (245) in the non-league meet.

Although Palma’s Matt Pinizzotto medaled with a 1-under 35, Cross finished right behind him with a 37 to lead the Balers. Kimura (47), DeLeon (48), Hopkins (48) and John Saldaty (51) rounded out the team.

San Benito will return on Thursday when it will take on Carmel at the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club at 2 p.m. Its next TCAL Tournament is slated for Monday at the Salinas Golf and Country Club.
