A 19-year-old Hollister man recently sustained life-threatening injuries while vacationing in Hawaii and his family is asking area residents for help in tempering the expense of his hospitalization.

Blake Byers, a graduate of San Benito High School, suffered a torn sinus membrane in a motor bike accident Nov. 6 that required brain surgery.

Debbie Fischer, a friend of the family and a teacher at San Benito High School, has set up the Blake Byers Medical Fund account at San Benito Bank for anyone wanting to help. Donations are tax-deductible.

Byers’ injury occurred while he and a friend were on vacation in Hawaii. Fischer said Byers needed surgery to repair bones around his eye in addition to the brain surgery.

His family flew to Hawaii after the accident, worried at the time that the injury might be fatal, she said.

“He took a full impact on the left eye,” Fischer said.

The only complication that remains is air trapped in Byers’ brain, Fischer said. Doctors X-ray his brain daily, and he and his mother hope to be home by Christmas, she said.
