HOLLISTER

The Hollister Police Department has been named WeTip’s “Police Department of the Year” for 2008.

WeTip is a national nonprofit organization that takes anonymous tips from callers in every state including the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Since its founding in 1972, WeTiP has received 480,000 tips, while phone lines are open for calls 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including holidays. WeTip offers rewards up to $1,000 for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of suspects.

According to a press release from the Hollister Police Department, Hollister was nominated for the department of the year award due to its willingness to fund participation in WeTIP not only for the city, but also for all of San Benito County. It is the first time that WeTIP staff could recall a city funding participation for an entire county.

The HPD and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office joined WeTiP in October 2008 in an effort to combat gang problems in the city and county.
