Joe M. Bettencourt passed away Sunday, Sept. 26 at St. Louise Hospital following a short illness. A native of Sunnyvale, he was 84.

He was the loving husband of 51 years to Emily V. Bettencourt of Gilroy; father of Larry Bettencourt and wife Bonnie of Soledad, and John Bettencourt and wife Saldrrena of Chowchilla; grandfather of Scott, Larry Jr., Eric, Rebecca, Brian, Christina, John II, and Chalena; great grandfather of eight; brother of John Bettencourt of Sunnyvale and his late wife Evelyn, Tony Bettencourt of Hollister, Frank Bettencourt and wife Evelyn of Vernalis, Manuel Bettencourt and wife Dolores of Gilroy, Eddie Bettencourt and wife Alma of Vernalis, Mary Escobar and husband Art of Gilroy, Louie Bettencourt and wife Mary of Gilroy and the late Filbert Bettencourt; godfather of Apple Fierro of Gilroy. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rose Bettencourt.

Mr. Bettencourt moved to Gilroy in 1966 from Sunnyvale. He owned and operated Bettencourt Dairy on Pacheco Pass for 45 years with his brother Louie. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, IFDES Hall of Gilroy. He enjoyed antique clocks and his gardening. His family would appreciate donations to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be held Wed. Sept. 29 from 1 to 5pm at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy followed by Vigil & Mass at St. Mary’s Church, Gilroy at 7pm. Committal services are scheduled for Thurs. Sept. 30 at 9:30am at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Gilroy.
